Dambulla is a town in Sri Lanka's cultural triangle, home to the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex on the island — five interconnected caves carved into a granite inselberg containing over 150 Buddha images and ceiling murals spanning 2,100 square metres. The site has been a place of Buddhist worship since at least the first century BCE and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The wide granite ledge in front of the cave entrances offers a panoramic view eastward across the surrounding dry plains.
