Pilgrims have climbed to the caves of Dambulla for twenty-two centuries. Beneath a vast overhanging rock, five sanctuaries shelter 157 statues and roughly 2,100 square metres of Buddhist murals that flow across ceilings and walls — Sri Lanka's largest and best-kept complex of cave temples. Gilded Buddhas recline and meditate in the painted gloom as worship continues daily. UNESCO inscribed the Rangiri Dambulla Cave Temple in 1991.
