Galle is a port city on Sri Lanka's southwest coast whose seventeenth-century Dutch fort, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encloses a living neighbourhood of colonial-era buildings, boutique lanes, and rampart walls still intact on three sides facing the sea. The bastion walls at sunset provide elevated views of the Indian Ocean and the activity of the harbour below. The fort's interior combines Dutch Reformed church buildings, mosques, and traditional Sinhalese architecture in a compact walkable area.
