Lonavala is a hill station on the Western Ghats at approximately 622 metres, positioned on the Deccan Plateau escarpment between Mumbai and Pune. During the monsoon season from June to September, the surrounding hills fill with cascading waterfalls and the valleys below vanish into cloud, making the escarpment viewpoints — particularly Rajmachi and Bhushi Dam — heavily frequented. The historic Karla Caves and Bhaja Caves, ancient Buddhist rock-cut shrines, lie within short distance of the town.
