Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve occupies the highlands of the Cardamom Hills in eastern Kerala, centred on an artificial lake created by the Mullaperiyar Dam. The reservoir draws large herds of Asian elephants to its shores year-round, making wildlife sightings comparatively reliable. Boat safaris on the lake provide close-range views of the forest edge, while trekking routes into the core zone are permitted with forest-department guides.
