Sonamarg, meaning Meadow of Gold, is a high-altitude valley at approximately 2,740 metres on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway in the Kashmir Himalaya, flanked by glaciers and snow-capped ridges. The Thajiwas Glacier is accessible by pony from the main meadow and remains snow-covered well into summer, making it one of the more accessible glacial environments in the western Himalayan arc. The valley is a trailhead for treks to Vishansar and Krishansar lakes and the Nichnai and Gadsar passes.
