Pahalgam is a valley town in the Lidder River valley at 2,130 metres in the Kashmir Himalayas, traditionally a shepherd's village that became a major summer resort. The Baisaran meadow above the town, surrounded by dense pine forest and snow peaks, is accessible by pony ride and offers sweeping alpine views. Pahalgam is also the staging point for the annual Amarnath Yatra pilgrimage to the sacred ice cave at 3,888 metres, undertaken by hundreds of thousands of Shiva devotees each summer.
