The Golden Temple, formally the Harmandir Sahib, is the holiest shrine of Sikhism, situated in the centre of a rectangular sacred pool called the Amrit Sarovar in Amritsar. The two-storey golden-domed structure, faced with 400 kilograms of gold leaf, is accessible via a marble causeway and its reflection shimmers in the still water at dawn and dusk. The langar, or communal kitchen, serves free vegetarian meals to 100,000 or more people each day regardless of religion or background, making it one of the world's largest free communal dining operations.
