Vrindavan is a pilgrimage town about 15 kilometres north of Mathura on the Yamuna River, considered by Vaishnavite Hindus to be the place where Krishna spent his childhood. The town contains over 5,000 temples including the sixteenth-century Govind Dev Temple, Banke Bihari Temple, and the Radha Raman Temple, all active centres of devotional worship. Narrow alleyways crowded with monkeys, marigold vendors, and pilgrims in white robes characterise the town's visual atmosphere.
