Allahabad Fort is a sixteenth-century Mughal fortress built by Emperor Akbar at the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers — a sacred point known as Triveni Sangam. The fort's massive walls and towers guard one of the largest Mughal fortifications remaining in India, and the Ashoka Pillar within its precincts bears some of the most important early Indian inscriptions. Triveni Sangam at the fort's edge is the site of the Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious gathering.
