Sarchu is a seasonal campsite and highway halt at 4,290 metres on the Manali-Leh Highway, positioned at the junction of Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh on the floor of a high plateau. The barren Martian-like landscape of reddish eroded mountains, braided glacial streams, and complete absence of vegetation creates an otherworldly visual environment. The surrounding formations known as the Gata Loops — a sequence of 21 hairpin bends ascending from the south — are among the most dramatic road sequences in the Himalayas.
