One of the world's largest artificial lakes by surface area, Lake Volta was formed by the construction of the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River in the 1960s, generating hydroelectric power for Ghana and neighbouring countries. The lake's irregular shoreline is dotted with fishing communities that transit the water by dugout canoe, and certain stretches of the lake pass through scenic gorges near Kpong and Akosombo. Boat trips on the lake offer access to communities otherwise unreachable by road.
