An active stratovolcano and the highest point in Cape Verde at 2,829 metres, Pico do Fogo dominates Fogo island and last erupted in 2014–2015, with lava flows partially burying the caldera village of Chã das Caldeiras. The ascent of the steep volcanic cone rewards climbers with panoramic views over the island and surrounding Atlantic Ocean. Within the caldera, vineyards cultivated on volcanic soil produce the island's distinctive wine.
