Gishwati-Mukura became Rwanda's fourth national park in 2015, comprising two fragments of montane rainforest in the Congo-Nile Divide that are being actively restored after near-total clearance for agriculture and refugee settlement in the 1990s. Chimpanzees were reintroduced after a decade of forest recovery, and golden monkeys inhabit the bamboo zones linking the two main forest blocks. The park offers guided primate trekking in a context where ecological restoration is tangibly visible across the landscape.
