The Danakil Depression is one of the earth's lowest, hottest, and most geologically active landscapes, a tectonic rift floor lying up to 125 metres below sea level where three continental plates are pulling apart simultaneously. The Erta Ale volcano maintains one of the world's few persistent lava lakes, visible by torchlight from the crater rim. At Dallol, hydrothermal vents produce acid-sulfur pools in vivid yellows, greens, and oranges whose chemical extremity and colour saturation have made the site a reference point for astrobiology research.
