Pemba lies 50 kilometres north of Zanzibar and remains considerably less developed, its steep interior covered in dense clove-cultivation forest that earned it the Swahili nickname 'the Green Island.' Underwater walls dropping hundreds of metres make it a destination for technically experienced divers seeking pristine coral overhangs, strong drift currents, and schooling pelagic fish. Flying foxes roost in mangrove systems along the coast, and the island retains the quiet character of a working agricultural community.
