The Selous — now renamed Nyerere National Park in its protected core — is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, covering over 50,000 square kilometres of southern Tanzania. The Rufiji River system threads through miombo woodland and grassland, sustaining Africa's largest hippopotamus population and one of its largest elephant and wild dog populations. Boat safaris along the river offer a perspective unavailable in most East African parks.
