Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest peak at 5,895 metres, an extinct stratovolcano whose summit glaciers are rapidly retreating under modern climate conditions. Six official trekking routes ascend through five distinct vegetation bands — cultivated slopes, rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic summit — with the crater rim offering views across the cloud layer stretching to the Kenyan plains below. No technical climbing skills are required, though acclimatisation protocols are essential for reaching Uhuru Peak.
