Zanzibar island, known locally as Unguja, combines Indian Ocean beaches of powdery coral sand with the UNESCO-listed Stone Town, a dense warren of Omani, Indian, and Swahili architecture centred on ornately carved wooden doorways. The northern and eastern shores hold the island's clearest water and finest snorkelling reefs, while spice plantations in the interior recall centuries of clove trade that once made this archipelago the world's leading supplier. The island is accessible by ferry from Dar es Salaam in approximately two hours.
