The Serengeti's 14,750 square kilometres of endless plains form the stage for the largest terrestrial mammal migration on earth, with over 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and 500,000 Thomson's gazelles moving in an annual circuit dictated by rain and grass. The southern short-grass plains produce the calving season between January and March, drawing concentrated predator activity. The Grumeti and Mara river crossings in the western corridor and north are considered among the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in the world.
