Kakamega is Kenya's only surviving tract of equatorial rainforest, a relic of the Congo Basin forests that once extended across East Africa. Its 240 square kilometres shelter over 330 bird species, 400 butterfly species, and primates including the red-tailed monkey and black-and-white colobus. Forest walks at dawn and dusk offer the best opportunity to observe the complex understorey ecology and to hear the ensemble of hornbill and turaco calls that define the experience.
