A classical Chinese garden compresses whole landscapes — mountains, forests, lakes — into a courtyard, and nowhere was the art carried further than in Suzhou. Nine gardens in the historic city, created and refined between the 11th and 19th centuries, are honoured as masterpieces of the form, each a meditation on the metaphysical weight of natural beauty in Chinese culture. UNESCO inscribed the Classical Gardens of Suzhou in 1997.
