An Omani exclave separated from the rest of the country by UAE territory, Musandam occupies the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz and is characterised by fjord-like inlets — locally called khors — cut deep into bare limestone mountains plunging directly into the sea. Traditional dhow boats navigate the narrow channels between villages accessible only by water. The khors of Khasab attract pods of dolphins and are excellent for snorkelling over coral and rocky reefs.
