The highest peak in the Hajar Mountains and in Oman at approximately 3,009 metres, Jebel Shams rises above a canyon known as Oman's Grand Canyon — a vast chasm over 1,000 metres deep carved by ancient drainage systems. The Balcony Walk trail traverses the canyon rim offering vertiginous views across stratified limestone walls and down to a dried riverbed below. The summit plateau is cold enough for frost in winter and offers clear skies for astrophotography far from coastal haze.
