A volcanic mountain massif in southeastern Morocco between the High Atlas and the Sahara, characterised by dark basalt spires, eroded gorges, and a semi-arid landscape that supports nomadic herders year-round at elevations where snow rarely falls. The terrain is drier and more rugged than the High Atlas, and hiking routes through the Saghro offer a less-frequented alternative to the Toubkal region. The Aït Atta Berber community has inhabited the area for centuries, and their fortified granaries (ighermans) dot the ridgelines. The rock formations photograph particularly well in the low winter light.
