A freshwater lake in the Jordan Rift Valley in northern Israel, the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the largest freshwater body in Israel. The lake is central to Christian tradition as the setting of numerous events in the Gospels, and the surrounding shores preserve numerous ancient sites including Capernaum and the Mount of Beatitudes. The hilly landscape enclosing the lake, green in winter and tawny in summer, provides scenic viewpoints from several directions. Fishing boats working the early morning mist over the water are a long-documented feature of the landscape.
