A fortified village, or ksar, built in pisé earth on a hillside above the Ounila River along the old caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakesh. The layered towers and crumbling ramparts, still inhabited in part, glow warm ochre at dusk. The site has been used as a backdrop for numerous international film productions. Crossing the river on foot and ascending to the ruined granary at the summit provides a panoramic view of the surrounding hammada.
