The highest peak in Turkey at 5,137 meters, Mount Ararat is a large dormant stratovolcano near the borders of Armenia and Iran, its upper flanks permanently glaciated. The mountain's isolation and symmetrical profile give it an exceptional visual presence — it dominates the entire plain of Doğubayazıt from all directions and is visible from Yerevan in Armenia on clear days. Climbing the mountain requires a special permit and is typically organized as a multi-day expedition from the base camp at around 2,200 meters.
