The best-preserved Roman theatre in the world, the theatre at Aspendos was built around 155 CE and seats approximately 15,000 spectators within walls that still stand to their original height. Unlike most ancient theatres, the stage building and its elaborate architectural facade remain largely intact, giving an accurate impression of how a Roman performance venue functioned. The site sits inland from the coast near the Köprüçay River, and the surrounding plain contains additional ruins of the ancient city including an aqueduct and agora.
