A narrow gorge cut by the Melendiz River into the volcanic plateau southwest of Aksaray, Ihlara Valley extends roughly 14 kilometers and drops about 150 meters below the surrounding plain. The canyon walls contain over a hundred rock-cut Byzantine churches decorated with frescoes, partially hidden by vegetation that lines the riverbank trail. The combination of flowing water, poplars, and ancient cliff churches carved into dramatic volcanic basalt makes the valley visually distinct from the open fairy-chimney landscapes further north in Cappadocia.
