The highest natural rock formation in Cappadocia, Uçhisar Castle is a massive volcanic plug riddled with cave dwellings and tunnels that has served as a fortified refuge and lookout point since antiquity. Climbing to its summit provides the broadest panorama available from ground level in the region, taking in the full extent of the Göreme valley, Mount Erciyes to the east, and the patchwork of orchards and vineyards below. The castle rock is visible from most points in central Cappadocia, making it a natural orienting landmark for the wider landscape.
