One of the largest and best-preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean world, Ephesus was a major port and commercial center of the Roman Empire. The marble-paved Curetes Street leads past the Fountain of Trajan and the Library of Celsus, whose two-story facade remains largely intact. The Great Theatre, carved into the hillside and seating roughly 25,000 spectators, still conveys the civic ambitions of the ancient city.
