The ancient town of Nessebar occupies a small rocky peninsula connected to the Black Sea coast by a narrow isthmus, its stratified archaeology running from Thracian and Greek colonial settlement through Byzantine and medieval Bulgarian phases. Over thirty churches have been documented on the peninsula, several still standing in ruined form with decorative blind niches and polychrome stone and brick facades. The peninsula's perimeter walls and waterfront, especially at sunset, are photographed from the isthmus road and from boats in the bay.
