Three millennia of Black Sea history crowd onto Nessebar's small rocky peninsula. Thracians settled it as Menebria; Greeks made it a colony early in the 6th century BC, leaving an acropolis, an agora and a temple of Apollo; Byzantium later counted it among its key strongholds on the western coast, adding fortifications and churches such as the Stara Mitropolia basilica. Timbered 19th-century houses fill the lanes between the ruins. UNESCO inscribed the ancient city in 1983.
