Karlovy Vary is the largest and best-known of the West Bohemian spa towns, built along the confluence of the Ohře and Teplá rivers, where over a dozen hot mineral springs have been exploited since the 14th century. The Mill Colonnade, a 19th-century neo-Renaissance gallery 132 metres long sheltering five springs, anchors the promenade that runs along the Teplá through a canyon of grand hotel facades. The Vřídlo geyser, erupting a column of 73°C water 12 metres into the air, is the town's highest-discharge spring.
