Visegrád occupies a narrowing of the Danube Bend where the river turns abruptly south after entering the Transdanubian Highlands. The medieval royal palace ruins at river level and the hilltop citadel together formed one of the most important court complexes in 15th-century Europe under Matthias Corvinus, and the panorama from the citadel across the Danube Bend to the Borzsony hills is among the most celebrated viewpoints in Hungary.
