Esztergom is Hungary's oldest royal city, seat of the Archbishop of Hungary, and the crossing point where the Maria Valeria Bridge connects Hungary with Slovakia over the Danube. The Basilica, the largest church in Hungary, occupies the castle hill above the river and is visible from the Slovak bank at Štúrovo several kilometres away. The castle museum below the basilica contains a restored Renaissance royal chapel considered the finest example of that architectural style in Hungary.
