Bükk National Park covers the largest continuous forested upland in Hungary, a limestone plateau rising to 959 metres that is perforated by over 900 caves and sinkholes. Beech forests dominate the plateau, with rare steppe meadows on the southern margins that support populations of woodland butterflies and ground-nesting birds. The Szalajka Valley on the park's northern edge combines waterfalls, a narrow-gauge steam railway, and open-air demonstrations of traditional crafts within a wooded river gorge.
