Varna is Bulgaria's principal Black Sea city and a major port on the western shore of the sea, with a historic centre containing Roman thermae from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD that rank among the best-preserved baths in the Balkans. The Archaeological Museum holds the Varna Gold Treasure, a collection of 4,500-year-old gold artifacts that represent the oldest worked gold in the world by volume. Wide sandy beaches extend north and south of the city centre along a tree-lined seaside park.
