Eger is a baroque town in the foothills of the Mátra and Bükk ranges, best known for its 16th-century castle and for the surrounding wine region that produces Egri Bikavér, the red blend historically marketed as Bull's Blood. The town's cathedral is the second largest church in Hungary, and the narrow lanes of the historic centre contain dozens of elaborately decorated baroque facades. The Valley of the Beautiful Women just west of town holds rows of wine cellars carved into volcanic tuff.
