Wind and water have worked the sandstone of the Ennedi Massif into a labyrinth of cliffs, natural arches, rock pitons and hidden canyons in Chad's north-east. Permanent water in the deepest gorges sustains plants, animals and people alike in the middle of the Sahara. On the walls of caves and shelters, thousands of painted and carved images form one of the desert's greatest concentrations of rock art. UNESCO inscribed the massif as a mixed natural and cultural site in 2016.
