The Furka Pass crosses the central Swiss Alps at 2,429 metres, connecting the Rhône Valley in Valais with the Urseren Valley in Uri. The road passes the snout of the Rhône Glacier, which has retreated visibly over recent decades and is covered with white felt blankets in summer to retard melting. The sinuous switchbacks descending each side of the pass appear in several notable films and have been driven by motorsport enthusiasts for decades.
