Stein am Rhein is a small town at the western end of the Untersee where the Rhine exits Lake Constance, its Rathausplatz considered one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval market squares in the German-speaking world. The half-timbered and stone buildings are decorated with elaborate fresco murals depicting historical and mythological scenes, most dating to the sixteenth century. Hohenklingen Castle overlooks the town from the forested hillside above.
