Lake Zurich extends 40 kilometres southeast from the city of Zurich through a glacially carved basin, with the Glarus Alps visible at its far end. Lakeside promenades in Zurich itself connect a chain of bathhouses, and boat services link numerous lakeshore towns including Rapperswil at the lake's midpoint, where a medieval castle overlooks the water. The lake freezes completely only in exceptionally cold winters.
