Säntis is the highest peak in the Alpstein massif at 2,502 metres, reaching above the rolling Appenzell pre-Alpine landscape and providing views extending across seven countries on clear days. A cable car from Schwägalp ascends to a station just below the summit, where a meteorological station has operated continuously since 1882. The surrounding Alpstein plateau is crossed by trails passing several mountain lakes including Seealpsee and Fälensee.
