Appenzell is the capital of the half-canton Appenzell Innerrhoden, a small market town of painted houses along the main square and the Dorfplatz fountain. The region is known for its folk art tradition, traditional costumes, and the Säntis peak rising to 2,502 metres above the Alpstein massif behind the town. Appenzell was the last Swiss canton to grant women the right to vote in cantonal elections, in 1990.
