Tr’ondëk-Klondike

When the Klondike Gold Rush swept up the Yukon River as the 19th century closed, the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in found their sub-arctic homeland transformed almost overnight. This serial site preserves archaeological and historic places recording both the colonization that followed and the First Nation's response to it — grounds of exchange between Indigenous people and newcomers, and places where Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in life carried on under changed terms. UNESCO inscribed Tr'ondëk-Klondike in 2023.
