The capital of Vorarlberg on the eastern shore of Lake Constance, Bregenz combines a small medieval upper town — the Oberstadt — perched on a hill with a modern lakefront quarter below. The Bregenzer Festspiele, held each summer, stages large-scale opera productions on a floating stage over the lake that is among the most dramatic performance settings in the world. The Pfänder mountain above the town is accessible by cable car and offers panoramic views across Lake Constance to Germany and Switzerland.
