L’Anse aux Meadows National Historic Site

Around the year 1000, Norse seafarers hauled their boats ashore at the tip of Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula and raised turf-and-timber buildings like those of Greenland and Iceland — the earliest known European presence anywhere in North America. Excavated foundations of the 11th-century settlement still shape the coastal grassland at L'Anse aux Meadows, which UNESCO inscribed in 1978 among the very first World Heritage sites.
