Life got big for the first time here. The sea-battered cliffs at Newfoundland's south-eastern tip hold the oldest large fossils known anywhere on Earth — deep-sea creatures of the Ediacaran Period, 580 to 560 million years old, which ended almost three billion years of purely microscopic evolution. Along a rugged 17-kilometre strip of coast, whole fossil seafloor communities lie pressed into the rock. UNESCO inscribed Mistaken Point in 2016.
